Understanding Your Own Behavior Style, and Why It's Important

Last week on the blog, we talked about identifying your team’s behavioral styles, and why it is important. You can read that post and reference the DiSC framework here.

This week, I want to focus on you. You also have a unique behaviour style and understand that can give a common language to empower you and your team to work better and enjoy a healthier culture.

What’s most important is that ALL styles are necessary and equally valuable. We are all a blend of styles, with one or two leading the way.  Let’s have another look at those profiles as a reminder.

Dominance

  • Direct, Results-Oriented, Strong-Willed

Influence

  • Outgoing, Enthusiastic, Optimistic

Conscientiousness

  • Analytical, Reserved, Precise

Steadiness

  • Even-tempered, Humble, Tactful

While we use the DiSC styles to understand our team’s needs and what motivates them, we can use this same method to understand where our strengths and weaknesses lie as leaders of that team.

If your style is D - Dominance, you may find that you unintentionally forget to celebrate your team’s successes. If C- Conscientiousness style is more you, is there a chance you may hold back on sharing your true self, and some details that would make you more personable/approachable?

Lean into what comes naturally for you, while also being conscious of what is natural for others so you can mesh and appreciate differences. Recognize the areas for improvement and speak openly about your goals to fill the gap. As a group, you’ll collectively understand each other better, and together, move towards a healthier dynamic.

Want to learn more about personality profiling? I will be leading a small cohort open training for Managers as well as a DiSC Work of Leaders cohort in June. Stay tuned!
